Herm with erect phallus. Marble, ca. 520 BC. From Siphnos. The herm was a familiar sight in ancient Greece. Hermes was both a phallic god and, later, a protector of travellers. These namesake sculptures served as signposts and boundary markers, but also had an apotropaic, or evil-averting, function.
